How to prepare for dental implants
-
What does the sedation process look like?Come for a consultation to discuss your treatment and sedation needs. Schedule an appointment for treatment. Within about 30 minutes of arriving you’ll be given medication to start relaxing you. We adjust your medications to get you sleepy and comfortable. Your work is done, and we let you wake up. Patients typically only remember small portions of the treatment, some remember nothing at all. You are driven home and cared for by a family member or friend for the rest of the day.
-
Are there other sedation options besides the IV?Yes, laughing gas (nitrous oxide) can be used for minor procedures or patients with only minimal anxiety. Pill or liquid sedatives can be given the night before or prior to coming back to the office for more severe anxiety. An IV can be started when the patient is in the office to give additional medications for their safety and comfort.
-
What does being sedated feel like?Patients feel sleepy and calm very quickly. Many patients’ next clear memory is of the procedure ending and leaving the office. We don’t hear about or see any patients hallucinating or acting goofy. In fact, most describe it as a great nap and find that time passes very quickly.
-
Do I need a driver? For any IV or pill-based sedative, yes you need a driver, and someone will need to stay with you the rest of the day also. For laughing gas (nitrous oxide), no, you do not need a driver but it is optional.
-
Am I a good candidate for IV sedation? Most patients are candidates for IV sedation. A complete review of your medical history and physical exam of important aspects is done prior to starting treatment. Coordination with your physician is sometimes needed to determine the best plan for your care. At our office, we only offer IV sedation to teenagers and adults. Minimum age is 13. Children less than 13 are only candidates for laughing gas (nitrous oxide) at our office. Unfortunately, providing sedation for patients with Down syndrome is not safe in our type of setting. Many patients with autism spectrum disorders can be safely treated with IV sedation. IV sedation allows safer adjustment to your individual needs, rather than pill-only forms of sedation.
-
Will I be nauseous? We don’t see very much nausea and vomiting with the techniques we use, but for patients who are at risk of this, they are given nausea medications in the IV before leaving. Sometimes nausea pills for use at home are also given.
